What Makes a Vivid Color Specialist Different from Grey Coverage or Blonde Color Specialist?

A vivid color specialist also known as a unicorn hair specialist or mermaid color specialist, understands the application, maintenance, fading, and removal of vivid colors. With hair color “what you see is not what you get”. An experienced vivid colorist understands what starting color your hair needs to be in order to achieve your goal color. For instance: Everyone’s hair lightens to red, orange, and yellow. Your stylist must understand how those underlying colors plus the color they apply will appear when layered on each other. An example is, if you wanted to have GREEN hair and your stylist could only lighten you to red or orange, your green is likely either going to look dark green or swampy green/brown since red and green are opposite colors and tend to make brown.

A vivid color specialist understands that even though there are “permanent” vivid colors, these do not mean that they last longer than the semipermanent version. Permanent vivid colors simply mean that they can lighten the hair and deposit the vivid color into the hair at the same time. Usually the permanent version does not last as long (unless it is on the warm spectrum: orange, red, or red violet). So for better longevity it is usually best to use lightener (aka bleach) to lighten the hair and then a semipermanent color to color the hair.

Your vivid color expert should also explain to you how to maintain your color at home. These tips are similar principles to maintaining any hair color. This will be explained in another article: “How to Maintain your color at home.” Ask If there are shampoo, conditioner, and even a color lock spray that your stylist can recommend for you to keep your color as long as possible.

Not all vivid color lines are created equal. Some color lines fade much more quickly than others, some color lines are incredibly difficult if not impossible to remove from the hair. Different color lines fade differently depending on the pigment used and underlying colors. Some purples fade purple, some may fade pink, and they also commonly fade to blue. Black can fade purple or blue. At Atlantis Salon your color specialist will explain how the color fades (sometimes it is unpredictable one hundred percent), how to maintain it, and if vivid color will work well with your lifestyle. One principle with fading vivid colors is that Pastels will usually only last 3-10 washes depending on the depth of color. The lighter the pastel, the faster it fades. The other principle with vivid colors fading is that they will all fade to some degree and vivid colors will never stay completely vibrant for life.

At Atlantis Salon, your color specialist has worked with multiple vivid color lines and found a more unique line that stays longer than the “typical” vivid colors in your average salons so that your investment can last longer.

If  you are choosing a really vibrant color- expect that it may be impossible to remove it a hundred percent. So if you are a blond choosing a medium-dark color, that color will likely never be able to return to a true bright blonde again. With blondes who are used to being blonde your color expert will usually recommend pastels for fast easy fading. Lavender being the most popular since it fades to a beautiful icy blonde.
