Do you love your color at the salon and then you find that your color tends to fade fast at home? Does your brown color turn auburn or orange? Do your mermaid colors fade to pastel too fast? Here are your color expert’s favorite tips for keeping hair from fading:

1)    Color Safe Shampoo and conditioner: Color safe shampoo and conditioner should contain gentle cleansing agents that don’t strip the hair of color. They should also be PH balanced to help your hair hold color best. Ask your color specialist what they recommend for your specific color

2)    Cool Water: If you like a hot shower, simply clip your hair out of the way and wash it in tepid, or as cold of water as you can stand. Hot water is great for removing lots of things including your color when washing.

3)    Wash your hair as infrequently as possible. If you can wash your hair every 3-7 days, your color will stay much more vibrant. Even if you use the best shampoo and conditioner out there for color, water will ALWAYS rinse some color out. Think about what created the Grand Canyon: WATER. Water is powerful for rinsing things away. Use a non-aerosol dry shampoo that doesn’t contain alcohol to keep your scalp from becoming too oily.

4)    Beware of alkaline and alcohol products like hairspray that can strip especially semi-permanent colors right out of the hair.

5)    Turn down the heat on your hot tools. Flat irons and curling irons can burn the color right out of your hair, turn brown hair brassy, and blonde hair an ugly dark yellow. Use a heat protectant whenever using hot tools like a dryer, curling iron or flat iron. And remember- you only have 100% heat protection usually from 260 degrees and below. Above that you are only getting about 50% heat protection. Heat style your hair as little as possible, especially with a flat iron since this is pulling your hair AND adding heat

6)    Stay out of pools! Chlorinate pools tend to strip the hair of color, and while saltwater pools are less damaging, they are not ideal. Remember- water in general strips the hair of color.

7)    Wear a hat or cover your hair in some way when in the sunlight. Do you remember how much your patio furniture fades in the sunlight? UV rays will also fade your hair color fast. You can ask your stylist about a leave in spray with UV protection to help. However, keeping your hair out of the sun will be the best option to keep it from fading.

8)    Keep your hair healthy and moisturized. Have you ever tried to apply a self-tanning mousse to dry crusty skin? The color probably appeared very uneven and patchy. Every time you color and/or wash your hair you are removing moisture. Ask your stylist what leave in conditioner would work best for your hair. Healthy moisturized hair holds shine and color so much better.
